Active Directory Nested Groups

In this tutorial, you will learn how to list groups that are members of another group (nested groups).

Nested groups are groups that are a member of another group.

For example, this HR_local group is a member of the IT_Local AD group.

To find all nested groups in Active Directory follow these steps.

Step 1. Open the Group Report Tool

Step 2. Choose Paths

  • Enter Domain = This will get all users group membership
  • Select OU or Group = Gets user group membership of users in an OU or group
  • Search = Search for a group

Step 3. Run

1. Click on “Filters” and make sure Include Nested Groups is selected.

2. Click run.

When the report is completed you will have a list of users group membership. To only display nested groups click on the objectClass column and click the filter icon, then select group.

Now you will have a list of all groups that are members of other groups.
