Find Inactive Computers in Active Directory

In this guide, you will learn how to find inactive computer accounts in Active Directory by using the AD Pro Toolkit.

  • The toolkit uses the computer’s lastLogonTimestamp to find inactive computer accounts.
  • You can enter any number of days to search for inactive computers.
  • Note: The lastLogonTimestamp does not provide real-time logon details. Therefore it is recommended to search for at least 30 days of computer activity.

Inactive Computers for 30 days

Follow these steps to find computers that have been inactive for 30 days.

Tip: The toolkit will search for both users and computers by default. To only display inactive computers click on filters and uncheck “Show Users”

Step 1. Open the AD Cleanup Tool

Step 2. Select No logons within and enter 30. Click Run to view the report.

By default, enabled and disabled computers will be displayed. You can click the filter icon to limit the results to only enabled computers.

Add or Remove Computer Fields

To add or remove columns to the report click the Columns button.

Use the attribute selector to add or remove computer fields. Use the up and down arrows to arrange the columns.
